To decouple various nuclear spins in a 1H NMR spectrum, we use a selective radio-frequency irradiation. These experiments are performed as Fourier transform spectroscopy, introduced by Ernst and Anderson in 1966. Based on the same pulse sequence, we measure so-called "spin tickling" experiments, described by Freeman and Anderson in 1962. NMR SPECTROSCOPY IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY J54 J57 J59 1.0 Figure 1. Proton spectrum (100 MHz) of cis-diiodonorbornane (2) and INDOR spectra; primary experiment [1] and consecutive experiment [2] indicates10 that the unknown proton is indeed H(4) and that its neighbour is H(5) on the methylene bridge, this being spin-coupled to the endo-protons H(7.

Other techniques include spin-tickling, spin decoupling (reduces the complexity of the spectrum by removing the effects of the irradiated nuclei), triple resonance, and multi pulse methods. Two dimensional NMR spectra are also obtainable. Correlated spectroscopy (COSY) gives details about couplings between nuclei of a single isotope.

The magnitude of splitting is expressed as the.

The NMR line shapes obtained in spin-tickling experiments are calculated using the quantized field formalism. First order treatment gives the same results as the usual semi-classical rotating frame technique. The second order terms, very easily obtained in our formalism, modify the line shape appreciably. Publication: Chemical Physics Letters. Abstract An effect, not unlike "spin-tickling" in nuclear magnetic double resonance, can occur in single resonance spectra if there is a fortuitous proximity of particular spin states. Observation of the perturbation allows the assignment of relative signs of coupling constants; the perturbation may be chemically manipulated by changing solvents.

Foundations for 2D NMR • All 2D experiments have a direct (t 2) and indirect (t 1) dimension, given by the Varian parameters at and d2. • Digital resolution of a spectrum = # hertz/data point = sw/np for f2 and sw1/ni for f1 in any 2D experiment. • As in a 1D experiment, the digital resolution in the indirect dimension of a 2D experiment must be great enough to resolve. •Spin ticklingexperiments involve irradiation of single lines in the spectrum with a weak field, He, (~,H2/2~ < l J I) while simultaneuosly with a second field, HI, observing which of the unperturbed lines are split into doublets; transitions having an energy level in common with the tickledtransition are split. Such tickling experiments stimulated the invention of two-dimensional spectroscopy, but seem to have been forgotten for nearly 50 years. We show that tickling can readily be achieved in homonuclear systems with Fourier transform spectrometers by applying short pulses in the intervals between the sampling points.
